International Lifeguard Appreciation Day – July 31

As part of International Lifeguard Appreciation Day, held annually on July 31, the Lifesaving Society takes this opportunity to highlight the extraordinary work performed by all individuals in this profession. According to an internal survey, 60% of the 20,000 certified lifeguards are actively working in various swimming facilities to provide the public with safe swimming environments.

Summer Challenges

It is worth noting that current weather conditions are far from ideal for outdoor jobs, as the province has been continuously hit by historic heatwaves since June. With aquatic facilities experiencing particularly high traffic this summer, many schedules have been adjusted to extend swimming hours for the benefit of patrons. Lifeguards, driven by their unwavering passion for lifesaving, have risen to the challenge and maintained service despite these exceptional conditions.

Additionally, with the ongoing labor shortage, many facilities are operating with just enough staff to remain open and ensure compliance with safety standards. Nonetheless, the evidence is clear: Our aquatic facilities remain safe thanks to our lifeguards. Their professionalism, rigorous training, and determination to respond quickly continue to make a difference for countless citizens.

A Collective Initiative

International Lifeguard Appreciation Day is the perfect occasion to express our gratitude and recognition to these dedicated individuals whose primary motivation is to save lives.*

“I encourage aquatic facility managers to recognize the vital role lifeguards play and to show appreciation for their work. This special day is also an opportunity for everyone visiting a swimming area to say ‘thank you’ to the lifeguards who ensure our well-being and safety. Their dedication and commitment are indispensable, especially considering the importance of aquatic activities in maintaining healthy lifestyles.”

The Lifesaving Society has been tirelessly working for over a century to prevent drowning and water-related incidents. To achieve this, the organization implements eight programs designed to educate the public from various perspectives. These programs – Lifesaving, Prevention, Boating, First Aid, Consulting, Philanthropy, Sport Lifesaving, and National Drowning Prevention Week – are complementary and address the entire population. The 2020 Drowning Report is currently available on our website at www.lifesavingsociety.org.
